Seasonal Changes

Seasonal Changes

By Pattyann McCarthy

The days are hot and sunlight lingers, hanging on to finger threads as the night sky creeps in.

Catherine, anticipating it, can feel autumn coming early this year. Leaves have begun to fall, sparse for now, but soon, stunning gold and auburn foliage will cascade like snowflakes from baring limbs. The air will sweeten, aromatic with floral decay.

Soon, pumpkins will adorn yellowing lawns; bales of hay will sit under porch lights, pumpkin pies with cinnamon will fragrance kitchens, and the sky will blaze in vibrant oranges, purples, and pinks.

The homey feeling of fall is her favorite time of year.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I agree with other comments – lovely narrative, poetic. But I must ask whether it holds up as a “story.” No drama.

Thanks so much, Roy. You’re probably correct in that there’s no drama, but I was feeling ‘soft’ that day. 🙂
