June thought about the painting for days. Who was this woman on the canvas? Was this her? If so, she’d become the wrong person. This life-hardened face was not meant to be hers. Nor these deep crevices and patches of uneven skin. Yet, she knew it was her face. June painted and repainted. Eventually, she surrendered to the woman staring back at her.
For days June stared at the portrait, sometimes up close but often from across the room. She was learning to live with its presence. Would she, she wondered, one day long to be the woman in the painting?
Love this Michael! A beautifully written reminder to appreciate the present.
Beware the self that emerges from the canvas! Great piece, restrained & weighty.
Strong piece. Loved June deciding who she will be from the painting and accepting herself.
