Tori Beth watched as her mother, Laura, set a bouquet of dried flowers on the table next to a stack of recently read library books. Harvesting a handful of petals, Laura placed them on her favorite passages. Recognizing what Laura was doing, her daughter smiled. Tori Beth had helped her mother do this before.

She scampered to her room and returned with her own book. Laura grinned and handed her daughter a faded rose. Tori Beth plucked with gusto, explaining why her selected pages were her favorites. She closed it with a flourish.

Laura hugged her. “Now, let’s go return them.”

This shared moment of love between a mother and a daughter makes me long for a real relationship with my mother.
