By Ruth Hill
Her grubby, grinning, muddy puddle ran towards her, arms sail-like expectant of a hug. She mirrored the grin mechanically, then turned and ran, like usual. Her daughter knew the game and chased. Faces to the clouds, wind kissing their skin, they twirled together, bubbling laughter as always; mother and daughter spinning away the world. They sprawled onto the soft welcome of the damp grass, smiling.
She felt the return of tears. The words which had formed a rasping ball of pain in her throat since this morning whispered themselves, unbidden, past her dry lips.
“Daddy’s dead”
And their world fell apart.
Hello Ruth… this is a powerful piece of writing. Having lost people close to me, one’s world does fall apart. And how do you tell someone the worst news possible. But we move forward, cherishing more, the ones that are left.
This deserves more comments… you made me feel below the surface. This is a great piece of storytelling.
Thank you for such positive comments.
So sad to shatter the moment with the truth, but we go on . . . life continues . . . Nice writing, Ruth. 🙂
Indeed we do. Thank you for your positive feedback.
So much sadness in so few words. Well done.
Thank you.
This is very touching. So few words conjure up so many feelings. Very nice.
Thank you, Sue.
