One of the geese is honking senselessly, its neck rolling back to bellow out a shaking series of non-rhythmic honks while another follows, waddling slowly toward the water.
“That one sure has a lot to say,” I joke to the stranger, who, like me, stopped to watch the geese.
“You know, they mate for life,” he replies, now staring directly at me. I pray he’s not about to turn my friendly observation into a goose-themed come-on, so am relieved when he continues.
“Only when you’re together for life can you speak to each other like that,” he says. We both laugh.
I love this tiny fun story so much. After it ends on the page, maybe the two humans take a cue from the geese and mate for life after all?
What a sense of humor can accomplish in any situation!
