Since High School

Since High School

By David Derey

Just like in high school, Max sits four tables away from Heidi. He never dared being closer, only enjoyed her long blonde hair and green eyes from that distance. Something’s changed today, he tells himself. Maybe it’s because of that raging boner he woke up with this morning.

Max stands up. With assertive steps, he walks. Heidi notices, turning with a curious smile. Max keeps a steady course all the way—past Heidi—past the staff nurses and back to his room. He drops his dentures in a glass of water, and in his lonesome, whispers “chicken shit” again and again.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Interesting story. I am unsure of the hero’s age. Do the dentures mean he’s an old man? Or is he a younger man that had an accident? I want to know.

old man. Hence the staff nurses, and dentures.

Maybe it was too unclear. In which case – I am sorry.

Never be sorry for writing! I think it always a compliment when a reader ponders what I wrote. It means they are really considering my work. I posted my thoughts because I was really considering what you wrote.

I thought the dentures and nurses were a solid hint, but people always read things differently, and perhaps, this wasnt as cut and clear as I thought.

Whats amusing about drabbles, though, at least to me as a reader, is that sometimes, they don`t need to be a complete story. Sometimes we have to fill in the gaps.

Here, though, this was not the intention.

Anyways, glad to hear you liked it.

It’s nice to read and know that crushes and love have no age boundaries. I am warmed by your story. I will embrace old age, when the time comes, reminded that I will still be able feel. Clever and funny ending. Thank you!

I hope there’s a Since High School 2 where he finds that courage. And it’s inspiration for me to find my courage.
