Skin-deep Freedom

August 15, 2020 6 Comments

By Anna Isabella Lazarescu

The color of your skin and my skin is white, so we have it easy. Everywhere we go, this ease protects us, frees us. We have nothing to think about when we go working or visiting relatives.

I think of Joe’s dark hue and try to process how it would be to live in fear every day. Tuck his children in before heading to his night shift at the convenience store down Elmbrook and Main anticipating that, if a police patrol ever stopped him walking back home in the morning, he might never see them again.

Time to shed our ease.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Ug-g-g, you express it too clearly, too unambiguously, too convincingly, and too true.
