Slip Click

November 6, 2021 15 Comments

By Peggy Gerber

Briana sprawled on the couch scrolling through her Facebook feed when her finger slipped, and she accidentally clicked on an ad for adult diapers. “No!” she bellowed. She knew exactly what that meant.

From then on, her Facebook, Twitter, Instagram—even the games she played on her phone—included ads for Depends.

Weeks later, a large package arrived. Brianna’s new boyfriend peered inside at the diaper samples, coupons, and cheery brochure.

Kyle frowned, said he forgot his phone in the car, and would be right back. Briana heard his Honda Accord start and then noisily speed away.

Break-up by social media.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

A fitting and funny comment on the outsized role of algorithms in our lives these days. Well done, Peggy.

Oh, the power of social media!
(And why keep showing me ads for things I’ve bought already?)

So funny, Peggy. All of us have “clicked” on the wrong thing, and paid for it.

A funny but very true story! It flows well, pun intended.

    It’s best Kyle left.

He came to a quick decision without any discussion. Just think if Brianna did get together with him and something more serious came up. He would be gone fast. He would not be supportive.

    Great story!

It was brilliant. A little was lost on the kids because they did not know what an adult diaper is, but I thought it was really funny.

    That was funny!
Glad it doesn’t begin with “Based on a true story” ; )
