The snowy fields stretch out on both sides of him like an endless blank slate. No etchings of humanity to watch or witness, no mile markers to signal the conclusion of his journey.
His sliding tires jerk his frozen mind awake. He is soaring off the road, landing on an iced lake, silvery and sharp. Warm breath clouds the side window as he calms himself in the muggy dread of December’s dead stillness.
Tiny, delicate steps bring him into the teethy chill of the winter’s night.
If he squints hard enough, he can see that a porch light is on. Safety.
