Spark

April 2, 2026 2 Comments

By Cameron Bloomfield

The class laughed at my fire elemental, their cruel glee booming around the lecture hall like the thunderous bellows of a storm atronach.

“It’s so small,” cackled the professor.

It was no bigger than a teardrop of flame; I received a D-minus.

As the period ended, or perhaps a little beyond, the fey my classmates had summoned burnt out in wisps of smoke, crumbled to dust or evaporated into droplets of nothing. But my fire elemental remained, hovering atop my shoulder, unable to do little more than keep my left ear warm. I called it: Spark. My friend for many years.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Cut to the chase. In as few words as possible, you introduced me to your Guardian Angel. Bravo!
