“Sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. Her life was surprisingly full of good fortune.”

“How so?”

“She was lucky. For example, winning our picnic table. A game show contestant once, and she won. Another year, it was a Mercedes raffled off for charity. In Vegas she played blackjack, always coming out ahead. Even during her last illness, she entered an airline drawing and won a European vacation. Because it was time limited, I asked if she considered giving it away. Her response? ‘No, I might want to go.’”

“Did she?”

“Actually, no. She died shortly afterwards of emphysema and alcoholism.”
