Spirit of the Raven

Spirit of the Raven

By James B. Revell

“This is the place, Dad. The one I read about.”

We had followed the logging road west from Port Hardy, all the way to the Pacific shore-line at San Josef Bay. We had seen bears at the road-side on three occasions, but no people.

My kids were looking at a weather-worn totem pole, mantled in moss, but still standing. Beyond it was an empty beach. I recognised the stylised features of the Raven.

A century before, Danish farmers had forsaken their lonely settlement and gone home. Years later, the Indians departed.

“Bad weather,” said the settlers.

“The Trickster,” said the Indians.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

      Hi Ella,
Thank you for your comment. Located in the remote NW corner of Vancouver Island, this place is truly atmospheric.

Kind of spooky and mysterious. Ingredients for a good story. And it is!
