Sports Day

August 15, 2017 8 Comments

By David Cook

I run as fast as I can. A little bit further, keep going… But Donnie Thomas has caught up. It’s just me and him now. Come on, come on… YES! I cross the finish line, arms wide. I did it! I won! The headmaster gives me a shiny medal. My first ever! Mum and Dad hug me and say how proud they are.

My daughter doesn’t, though. “Bloody hell, can everyone calm down?” she says. “It’s only the parents’ race. God, Dad, you’re so embarrassing.”

I feel a bit sad on the way home, but my hand never leaves my medal.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Ah, yes–parents deserve to feel proud of their accomplishments, too! Liked it.

Loved the twist, great utilization of such a small word limit.

Excellent story. Reminds me of my wife winning the mums race. See, I’m still proud.
