Spring Prayers

July 13, 2025 8 Comments

By Peggy Gerber

Tania hated the spring. She detested being awakened at 4:30 a.m. by the tap-tap-tapping of woodpeckers banging on trees, robins chirping manically, and gaggles of geese squawking their way up north. Every morning she’d get out of bed, bleary-eyed, praying for a bird apocalypse.

This annoyance continued for years, until one mid-April morning, Tania woke up and realized it was quiet. The birds were gone. With a pounding heart, she shook her husband awake. “Honey, am I the devil?” She gasped. “Did my prayers cause a bird apocalypse?”

“Tania,” he said, yawning, “haven’t I told you it’s time for hearing aids.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
