By Eli Daniel Ehrenpreis
I’m walking on a path through the forest preserve on the tail end of a run. It’s late winter, 40°, a perfect day.
A powerful buck stands on the path in front of me. I think about what I’ve been told to do in these situations. Never turn and run? Avoid eye contact?
“You should be afraid of me.”
So, I decide to stand still.
One of those cyclists in designer athletic gear speeds past me. The buck stays in position and then knocks the rider to the ground. The three of us walk slowly in opposite directions.
A perfect day.
