Alarm bells pierced the night, spotlights illuminating the complex. Dogs barked, men shouted, far away but closing fast. We ran, our hearts thumping.
“We’re not gonna make it,” Eric gasped. He was right—we were out of options.
Unless…
Eric’s eyes widened, barely visible. “You can’t stay behind!”
“I tripped the alarm,” I said. “It’s only fair.”
I grabbed his shoulders and pushed him forward. “Go!” Eric sprinted into the woods, not looking back.
The shot broke the night’s stillness, the bullet clipping his leg. He crashed to the ground, screaming.
I lowered the pistol and ran, pained shouts slowly receding.
Harsh 😉 – great personification of the axiom “I don’t need to run faster than the guard/bear/monster/etc., I just need to run faster than you.”
Well crafted piece, creating a real story with a twist in few words. Great stuff.
Brilliantly written.
Good stuff. I think it would be even better in present tense.
Bloody Brilliant! …
Excellent!
Very well written, definitely draws the reader in and the twist is totally unexpected. Well done!
Did not see that coming. Niiiice. Well, not so nice if you happen to be Eric, obviously.
