“Do you want to play a game?”
“What?”
“If I guess how old you are I get a kiss.”
“A kiss?”
“A little one. On the cheek.”
“Go on…”
James looked at the woman with a studious expression.
“You won’t get it,” she said.
“I’m almost there…”
James grinned.
“Twenty-three.”
“Thirty-three.” She smiled. “But thank you.”
“Do I get a kiss?”
“No, but you get a biscuit.”
She handed James his snack and winked over her shoulder as she left. He lay in the hospital bed, looking at the ceiling, as tubes pumped fluid in and out of his enfeebled frame.
I really enjoyed this. It’s the little every day things that us get us through the less wonderful parts of life.
