Supernatural Me

February 16, 2022 12 Comments

By Robert Bires

I was done with Santa Claus when my second daughter, Emily, started believing. I couldn’t continue the lie.

“Honey, I’m Santa Claus,” I told her.

“Come on,” she said. Emily was a literal child. Maybe she knew it didn’t add up, but she had me mail his letter to the North Pole.

Whenever Santa came up, I’d claim him. I never said there wasn’t Santa Claus, just that I was him; that I did his job for her.

She couldn’t cry. The presents matched her list.

Then, in the car after Sunday School, she asked me, “Daddy, are you Jesus, too?”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Our actions, however well-intended, often bring about unintended consequences, don’t you think? I can imagine my own young daughter (and now her children!) asking the same question!
