Tactical Warfare

September 20, 2024 11 Comments

By Joanne Macias

His lips were mere inches from mine, his breathing heavy. His eyes narrowed, anger rising.

“Say that to my face,” he growled.

“I won. Fair. And. Square.”

He leaned back, unsure of what to say next.

I wasn’t sure why he kept wanting to play Uno. I am numero uno. Just because he thought me putting all my draw four cards down was cheating, didn’t mean he hadn’t tried that tactic himself.
Knowing there would be no resolution to this standoff, I stood to leave the room.

“Wait? Aren’t we going to have a rematch?”

“I thought you would never ask.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nice! I used to play many a game of Uno (both in person and online), and this story brought back memories. Well done.

Thanks I appreciate it. The question though- do you stack the draw cards?

Well written. Captures the moment. Reminds me of my siblings playing cards, games etc.
