Robin sat down to her evening coffee and surveyed the backs of her hands. The skin had become so dry and calloused after picking up the extra shifts. She spread the invoices in front of her and closed her eyes. For a sweet moment, the bills didn’t exist.
She heard the familiar jiggling of keys and clumsy pull of the door handle. It was too late to pretend to be asleep. The smell of alcohol arrived before he did. He reached in to kiss her, but she turned her face to the side.
“I’m leaving you.”
This time, she meant it.
Loved this. Such economy of words, without missing out any essentials. In fact, the contractions added depth.
Very realistic, sadly. Well done!
