By Rob Walton
Tamara’s never blanched almonds before. She bites her nails to mask her trepidation. Mesmerized, I follow her fingers as she rubs off the skins and drops the nuts into a bowl next to the never-used baking tray. I suggest the Maldon salt but she face-palms me, saying this is her party and she makes seasoning and condiment decisions. I hold up my hands and leave her to it, retire to the next room to wrap her presents with magazine pages and garden twine. Thinking about knots, I hear the salt grinder, the curses, and the desperate search for the smoked paprika.
Lovely. The type of writing I can read over and over again.
