“You hear that?” Gran asks.
I take her aids, change the batteries. Whistling in her ears again.
“It’s the wind, Gran. Bad summer storm kicking up, radio says.β
Cows, calves shift toward shelter. Window wisps catch my eye: a silken fairy shell snagged on windowsill splinters, visible by farmdust.
Stretched by her arms—a tug of war the winds won. Wings shredded, her head bows like a crucifix, toes pointed toward an earth they will never touch.
Her strands rise…fall…silently tapping glass.
Gran insists. “Don’t you hear it?”
βGran?β
She tilts her head at me. “I keep hearing knocking.”
A suspenseful little story. Liked it a lot.
Thank you. Hard squashing it all into a 101-word mold. Lol
Love
Love that we ended up here together!
I know, right?
this is a great story! there’s just so much packed into such a tight word count. well done!
Thank you, EE! π Some of my favorite stories came from the times I used to sit with Gran out at the farm.
Well told with not a single wasted word. That is the challenge of 101 words.
Thank you, Barry. I suffered over the culling, I tell you.
Beautifully written!!
Thank you, Breana! π
Another triumph, Laura!
