He was eight; I was fifteen. Instantly, that made me his big brother. I found him curled up on the street, shivering in the cold, his tear-stained face filled with terror. It echoed my past—fatherless, mother gone at six, raised by my grandma until she died two years ago. Alone since. I shared my bread with him that night. We squeezed into my bed in my empty home, hands clasped together, finding family in each other until sleep took over. The police came the next day, revealing he had a home, just lost. I had thought he was homeless, like me.
