Test Flights

June 8, 2022 2 Comments

By Michael Slagle

Icarus buzzed my frigging lawn again, his shadow momentarily eclipsing the mid-day sky. It’s my fault for introducing him to ornithology. I’d hoped for a bird-watching partner but never imagined an obsession with avian aerodynamics.

He convinced his dad to design a pair of wings. (The old man’s always coming up with crazy inventions.) I thought they were using all the wax and feathers to build a glider. Then, last month they began test flights, higher and higher, some flights so high the wax started dripping.

I swear, one of these times he’s going to fly too close to the sun.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Love this piece, especially ‘avian aerodynamics’. So many great things you can do with myths and legends.
