“Sorry, you can’t see the body. And it can’t be buried in the cemetery. All victims of the pandemic are buried in the plot on the top of the hill. That’s the protocol.”
That was where unclaimed bodies were buried.
Even as we, a few friends and relatives, waved goodbye, the body was carted away by strange-looking figures clad in protective gear. It would be buried in an unmarked twelve-foot-deep grave and closed hurriedly.
The plot he had bought in the cemetery for his burial, next to his wife’s tomb, by paying a fortune, would lie vacant for the time being.
