The Caddy

August 17, 2022 3 Comments

By Moh Afdhaal

On the weekends, Mother and I would head to the clubhouse to watch the pensioners practice their swings. One of them, Mr. Reiner, asked me to caddy for him on Saturdays, and Mother approved. I saved the crisp notes he tipped, savoured the back pats he gave.

The money bought me my first 7-iron; the pats were for marrying Mother.

After baby David came along, Mr. Reiner and I would practice our swings every weekend. Mother stayed home.

David became my caddy shortly after Mr. Reiner left.

I made sure to tip him with crisp notes. Only cowards give back pats.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

A little clue to why he left the narrator’s mother, maybe? A good story. I enjoyed it 🙂

Brilliant story. A hole in one.
