The Dawning

The Dawning

By David Everly

I walk on the beach at sunrise, the sand wet and packed beneath me, squishing up between bare toes. The gentle wave’s rhythmic advances sweep over my feet in chilly, refreshing surges. There’s a light but steady breeze blowing in from the sea as the rosy pink and purples, in silent explosion, paint the distant horizon. So easy to believe in a loving creator at times like this. The pink and purple canvas soon morphs into a warmer, friendlier tangerine. There’s a bottle floating on the tide. I finish my morning prayer and read the note inside. It says, “You’re welcome.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

A small, neat, heart-warming story of thankfulness, and acknowledgement of same. A winner.

Pretty imagery and a note of appreciation.

A lovely scene. I would have preferred an ending with a tsunami and a death toll of thousands, not because I’m morbid, but because I’m a fan of Voltaire’s Candide. But I’m also not a huge fan of 101-word story twists, so found your message in a bottle something of a relief.

Currently, I’m reading deeply about Creation so found your story inspiring, in its (surface) simplicity, touching what it reached for. Rae Everette. You achieved it!

Really nice pace and imagery. Very thoughtful, and with a great message (pun not initially intended, but there it is). Great job!
