“Remember, choose this number.” The man slipped some cash into Toto’s hand. With a pat on the back, he was gone.
Toto sat still in the line. Soon it would be his turn. He stared ahead and caught the country flag flowing in the distance. He remembered the stories his grandfather told, how he fought for the flag with his life. For freedom.
Toto glanced at the money in his hand and shoved it into his pants pocket. When his name was called, he stepped into the booth and breathed deeply. Freedom had always been a luxury, even after seventy-three years.
