“What? Please tell me you’re joking!”
She had never heard such desperation in his voice before. Tears welled up, glazing his eyes with a thin, glossy sheen. His lips quivered, and he gnawed at a jagged fingernail frantically.
“I’m sorry, honey. I know you’re disappointed, but it’s not the end of the—”
“I can’t believe it,” he yelled. “What happened to the land of the free, the home of the brave? Was it all just a lie? This country is crumbling before our very godforsaken eyes.”
She sighed. “Mark, they were out of Pop-Tarts. It happens.”
He collapsed onto the couch.
