The Gift

July 11, 2022 9 Comments

By Brian Taylor

When Amanda awoke, her lower back screamed in pain. Unfortunately, the cafe expected her there regardless.

Her boyfriend, Kevin, refused to talk to her, just grunted.

The water heater was broken, so she had to take a cold shower. Then she stubbed her toe getting out, and discovered she had no more coffee. Sighing, she headed to work.

Rain soaked her clothes. Most of the customers were soaked, too, which made them rude and demanding.

When she finally got back home, a note on the door said, “Can’t deal anymore. Bye, bitch. Kev.”

She smiled. Her bad day just got better.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Obviously Kev had been on one of those courses on how to win friends and influence people. I enjoyed this story.

Funny! Makes me wonder why she didn’t dump Kev herself. He seemed as useful as the busted water heater.

Loved this. Bad when that kind of day is brightened that way. Great ending.
