Swords and flames storm starboard, and the dead lie under the smoke. The pirate’s fluyt blocks escape from a blue vortex, a swirling maw opening into a deep, black throat, the Ship Eater.
When a withered old sailor boasts of swimming its depths, I scoff.
The cabin boy hides near the helm, his eyes pleading. I slide my sword to him across the blood-spattered deck.
Perhaps they will spare him.
Perhaps not.
As the burning ship shudders, I dive from the taffrail into that twisting blue hole in the heart of the sea.
Not all captains go down with the ship.
