The Immigrant

July 3, 2022 5 Comments

By C. E. Gruen

The shutter sounded. The flash illuminated the immigrant’s face. His sister, terrified, knelt in his shadow.

They’d find their home in the folds of this big city.

The immigrant was young, still, with a future. He had seen the world but would still see more.

He knew three words in English—two of them were curse words, the last was ‘no.’ He did not smile when the shutter sounded. His dark eyes were large and gleaming, accusatory. There was so much around him since the ship had landed. He was overwhelmed. The immigrant could not smile.

But he was so happy.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Think you got the emotion of immigrants perfectly – he did not smile but was happy.
      Well done.
