The Last Key

October 27, 2025 20 Comments

By Charlito

Mira held the tiny key between trembling fingers, its cold metal weight anchoring her to the forgotten room. Dust motes drifted, sun slanting through cracked blinds like fractured hope. Years ago, she’d hidden memories here—letters, photographs, whispers of laughter long gone.

Now, the lock groaned as the key turned. The door creaked open, revealing a mirror darkened but intact. She peered inside, searching for herself. She wasn’t there—only a shadow flickering between light and dark, real and unreal.

Smiling faintly, Mira whispered, “Maybe some doors don’t lead back to where we begin. Maybe they lead forward.”

She stepped through.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

This is beautiful and intriguing. Also a great metaphor for life and uncertainty (as well as hope) about the future. Nice work :).
