Josh was out of the house, at last, and on the road again. Yet, the relentless drone of tires on asphalt was conspiring with his loneliness. He was struggling to prevent the memories of that final day from surging into the void.
The journey was dragging.
He reached for the radio and scanned for any station. It settled as one record faded and the next began.
Two piano notes were all it took.
Josh’s shoulders dropped and his fingers trembled.
He was flooded with Millie. Tears formed as the loss of her overwhelmed him.
There was still so far to go.
I liked this story a lot – been there myself and heard the two piano notes.
Just a personal preference, but I woukd have ended it:
“And the journey had just begun”
But well done……..
Nice metaphor here: Getting over a lost love really can sometimes be like the journey on a long road which seemingly no end. Liked it.
Oops! The next to last line, above should read “. . .a long road with seemingly no end.”
It is beautifully written. The journey from lost love is the longest
I found the use of “was” 4 times in the first two paras uninspiring writing.
Well done. Great story- but I would have called the girl Mollie
We have all heard those two notes and been brought back to another time and place. It’s amazing what music can do.
