I grew up on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. It’s where my brother was born. I never learned any Japanese. I don’t think any of us did.
When I was 10, I developed the habit of eating two dinners. It’s how I became the base’s fat kid. I would eat one in the family mess hall with all the other Americans, and then I would sneak into the cooks’ tent to eat with them.
How funny the scene must’ve looked—one fat white kid slurping up noodles while grown Japanese men cheered him on in a language he didn’t understand.
Hello Sam,
Kudos! Pithy.
