The Party

The Party

By Jeanne Althouse

She came for the party, but what she took back was thousands of white blossoms from acres of roadside blooming almond trees. Through the buggy windshield, she heard the trees, yelling with flowers, a cacophony across the meadow. Like rows of playground children, branches up, excited to be chosen.

She tucked them into her eyes. Their white petals overflowed her pupils. When she blinked they scattered like the dust of fallen snow.

Because the party, where she knew so few, where the host was rude and distracted, where the cake gave her stomach cramps, was not the moment she would remember.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Ah yes…some incredible, incredible imagery and use of words! “…trees yelling with flowers…”, “…playground children, branches up…” Loved it! This one is a Winner.

I very much like how you’ve evoked feeling and emotion through the steady but sure build up of detail and imagery. I look forward to reading the next one.

I especially like the middle paragraph. A great way to talk about the idea of focusing one one part of a memories as a means of blotting out what we’d rather forget.
