The dial tone in her ear sounded too loud, like a movie sound effect, as she waited for the phone to be picked up. After a while, she knew that no one would answer.
She could see what would happen next: in a few hours, or the next day, she’d get a message apologising for missing the call, asking her what was up, was she okay?
Even though she wasn’t, she’d reply saying she was fine and just wanted a casual chat. Because all the nerve that she’d used to call in the first place had disappeared by the third ring.
