The Puddle People

November 14, 2022 3 Comments

By Brian K. Bolen

Raya watched the rain. “Can I go out and play, Grandma?”

“No, stay inside.”

“Why?”

“B’cause, the Puddle People will getcha.”

Raya muttered something and opened the door.

“I’m warnin’ you, don’t go out there.”

Slamming the door, Raya hopped down the steps—laughing, skipping.

Across the street, puddles formed. Raya jumped into the largest, feet spraying water.

“Get outta there, child!”

Raya froze; her eyes widened, fingers splayed. “Help me, Grandma, help!”

Grandma watched as Raya descended into darkness, wagging one finger. “I told you, child.”

She turned and headed inside, knowing Raya’s older sister would be waiting for her.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Like most kids, puddles are fun, even after Grandma’s warnings she could not resist. To our surprise we find out that her sister met with the same fate.
Great story, author has a terrific imagination.

Nice! Had to read it twice to get that the older sister was in the puddle. Grandmas should be listened to!
