The Reveal

January 8, 2024 3 Comments

By Michael Talledes

The kids swarm my gender-reveal balloon. Punching it…yanking on the string—Ah! Where the hell are their parents?

“What are you hoping to have?” my father asks.

“Not one of those…” I point to the pack.

POP! The youngest child ruptures the balloon, sending a drizzle of pink confetti over his ice cream-splattered face.

The burst creates a tremor of silence, followed by a few forced “Hoorays!”

Tears wet the corners of my eyes. “It’s a girl…”

Putting his arm around my shoulders, my father whispers, “Surprise! Welcome to parenting… You’ll love and hate them at the same time.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
