The Runner

December 3, 2021 3 Comments

By Aine Meehan

He was what dad called a runner for O’Connor’s newsagents, and I believe (although it might not be true) that he lived above the shop, with boxes of out-of-date Christmas cards, amid old lamp shades, porcelain, and Sellotape.

Dad called him “slow,” which I never understood. He was speedy, in brown flared slacks and dirty white sneakers, using some secret portal to appear with messages and parcels in random shops, streets, and corners of town.

I hadn’t seen him in years, the shop is long boarded up, but I swear I saw him last week, smaller, but as fast as ever.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
