The Silent Screams

The Silent Screams

By Rajeswari Menon

He landed another solid punch. Raina stifled a rising scream, just as she had countless other times before. What would the neighbors think?

She remembered the horrible day that she’d accidentally let her guard slip. Nosy Mrs. Nair had spotted her in the garden and started her interrogation.

What happened yesterday? Who was crying? Did they have a fight? All couples fought. Why, she and Mr. Nair had got into quite a squabble last week, about the water bill of all things!

She’d nodded and smiled politely, because she was a well brought up young lady, a credit to her parents.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

A lot of women thankfully still are alive and free of abuse because of nosy neighbors. A good piece that touches on the cultural dynamics at work in the world that keep women oppressed.

Rajeswari, your story is a punch in the gut. Swift, powerful, painful. It is sad that some monsters have human DNA. Keep writing Ms. Menon, the world deserves you.

A very pertinent comment on an all too often occurring situation. Great job.
