The Storm

April 10, 2023 15 Comments

By Jeff Harvey

Uncle Grover hurried everyone down to the cellar. Aunt Della refused. As usual, she stood under a tree and dared the tornado to test her faith. Once Uncle Grover had the kids safe in the cellar playing go fish, he took a blanket to Aunt Della. She refused to let go of a branch. He placed his arm around her and guided her to the cellar. Aunt Della continued talking in tongues until she stood up and, with a raised fist, demanded to know what happened to baby Winthrop. Uncle Grover told her she’d be okay. She said, “That’s not enough.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Simply profound. Not only a mother’s (or mother figure) heartbreak but also what happens to oneself when faced with death and the unknown of the afterlife.
