The Unusual Walk

September 19, 2021 8 Comments

By Stephanie Cheng E-Laine

The night was cold and the road unlighted. Clouds shrouded the moon, which heightened my sense of unease. My heart thumped harder and I stepped up my pace. From the corner of my eye, I glimpsed a girl by the tree, hiding in shadows, coatless despite the chill. I called, “Are you okay?” She turned toward me, her face white as a sheet. “Never better.” Her voice sent chills down my spine as the frigid wind brushed against my cheeks. I closed my coat, walked faster, turned a corner, caught sight of the same girl hiding again, face pale in moonlight.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

A sense of threat and menace throughout this story. It also leaves the reader wanting to know more.

Consider deleting this comment, Howard. How rude. Do you have anything published here? And if so, I’d like to read it and make public comments on yours.

Nice imagery… makes me want to know what happens next… but that’s the beauty of this kind of story… we imagine the end… well done…
