The Village Idiot

The Village Idiot

By John J. Mirdo

Tommy is an idiot. Villagers can prove it to any newcomer in town.

They hold out a quarter and a nickel. “Tommy, which one do you want?” He looks at both coins then takes the nickel. The villager and newcomers walk away laughing.

Another day, Tommy is made the same offer. He again chooses the nickel. The villager laughs and strolls off.

The newcomer asks, “Tommy, do you know the difference between a quarter and a nickel?”

“Why, yes, of course I do.”

“Then why do you take the nickel?”

“Well, if I took the quarter, they’d stop offering the nickels.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

It’s an old joke, but it never gets old…there’s nothing like good ole country wisdom!

…loved it so much I sent a note to my friend Tommy (who lives in a small village in Thailand) to read it. John, he’s gonna kill me.
