The fire rose high, pirouetting around wooden logs arranged like a pyramid. She looked on as her mother-in-law folded her hands in prayer. Year after year she had seen her mother-in-law perform this semblance of rituals like a devout Hindu, praying for the long life of her husband. She, like a dutiful daughter-in-law, had participated alongside, praying for her own husband.
Her father-in-law was absent. He had walked out of the house after a heated argument about another woman. The ritual was her mother-in-law’s strength and revenge against him. He was merely a man. The Gods knew her as ‘The Wife.’
