Through the Gate

Through the Gate

By Philip Scholz

Sirens pierced the tranquil night as prison guards found their bound and gagged colleague wearing only socks and underwear.

A searchlight illuminated the rope ladder hanging from the fence and the headcount was short one inmate. Notorious murderer Joe Kelleher was loose.

Standing in the prison yard, Joe watched everyone follow his decoys. He examined himself before proceeding. The stolen guard’s uniform was slightly too big and he’d tucked in the excess fabric. It looked believable.

Volunteering to help search, Joe strode through the prison’s front gate as everyone scrambled ahead to find him. Once on the other side, he grinned.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
