To Heir Is Human

May 27, 2025 12 Comments

By Bud Pharo

“I am sorry to inform you over the phone, but your uncle has passed,” his somber attorney said. “The will-reading is tomorrow at his country estate.”

“I’m in his will?”

“Yes.”

Surprising, considering we weren’t close. During my last visit, we argued over vegetable gardening. “Before traveling, do you know what I’m getting?”

“Can’t say.”

At the reading: “To my nephew, I leave the crate of priceless heirlooms in my study.”

I rushed to the study. The crate, adorned with a large smiley face, contained dozens of multicolored tomatoes. The affixed note read, ‘See, I told you my heirlooms were priceless!’

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
