Todd

By Manheim Wagner

Todd stood atop the railroad bridge throwing railroad spikes below at the cars on the two-lane road.

“You guys are pussies. You never do anything. You just watch!” he shouted, grabbing another loose spike from the railroad bed.

Transfixed, we stood frozen in the cold winter night like we’d done right before he went to juvenile hall, when he lit the big field on fire trying to make a BMX track.

He poured gasoline on the tall weeds to outline the track and dropped the match.

“Fucking pussies!” he yelled, launching a spike right through the engine hood of a car.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Good quick forming of your bully, juvenile delinquent charcater Todd. I saw him doing all your wrote about. The story refired a painful memory of a friend almost dying driving in Maryland when 2 teens threw a water balloon (dropped like a rock) that shattered his windshield.

Whoa. That Todd’s a bad dude. I don’t foresee a promising future for him.

Great character sketch in 101 words, and nice job tapping in on the emotions of your narrator — uncomfortable with Todd’s actions, but afraid to do anything about them. It works well, because we’ve all been there.

I wonder what else happens with Todd? Lol. I like it. Direct. No time wasted. But I do wonder if he sticks to being this ass whole or if he becomes even worse than how he is now? And what are the consequences? Yes, nicely written. Nice way to make you wonder about this Todd problem.
