Trophy

May 24, 2024 2 Comments

By Marissa LaPorte

I shudder, staring at glassy eyes that stare back at nothing in particular. A dried tongue pokes out between two black lips. This is the first time I’m seeing a deer up close, and I reach out to pet the bristly, dusty hair on its neck. What a drag to be shot only to have your head hang for an eternity from your murderer’s wall.

“Are you admiring my trophy, son? That’s the first buck I shot.” My father pokes the tiny antler buds on top of the deer’s head. “He might have been small and young, but so was I.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
