It was in the days before streets were modified with speed humps to slow traffic. On rainy days the two friends raced icy pole sticks down the flooding gutters. They got used to speeding cars and to distinguish between sounds made by the gear boxes of different vehicles.
As children they shared everything and later, in adolescence, even loved the same woman.
When older, one moved to the country, married, and owned an automatic Audi A6, while the other remained single, continued to live in suburbia, and drove a manual Mazda 2. They never saw each other or that girl again.
A nice clear, well focused snapshot of life unfolding.
Wow. This has to be close to the ultimate in “moving on” stories. Loved it!
